Picasso in Paris - reworking

I decided to rework my Picasso in Paris poster today - the big beige expanses had been niggling at me for a while. Most commissions I finish and move on without a backwards glance, but with this one I kept hearing a little voice saying "perhaps just a little bit of confetti?".

Original poster:

(I think working on the collages has made me a bit more adventurous with colour and composition)

Unfold Poster 19: Tune-yards at Paradiso 6/6/11

This is why I was building cardboard mountains.

The animal featured in this poster is an endangered species called the Mountain Bongo which is native to Mount Kenya - there are less than 100 mountain bongos in Kenya living in the wild. More than 300 are living in American zoos, but the plan is for them to return to their natural habitat in Kenya eventually.

I really recommend you listen to the tUnE-yArDs - the new album W H O K I L L is available now, and they are playing at the Paradiso, Amsterdam, on 6th June.

We end up around the mountain that I climb to lose you

I am building a set for a new commission

Here's a little scrap I found from nearly 5 years ago, when I first began to use a mapping pen:

Say...

This is a poster I've been working on, for Alfred Hitchcock's Rope - a film about two men who kill another man with a piece of rope, hide him in a trunk, and then stage a dinner party using the trunk as the dinner table.

(It also features James Stewart's voice, which is quite fun to imitate...)

On the subject of Hitchcock, the BFI is currently trying to raise money to restore 9 silent Hitchcock films: http://www.bfi.org.uk/saveafilm.html

so... instead of printing the group photo of all the hardworking Back 2 Bikes volunteers standing beneath my banner, this week the Express and Star printed a picture of local MP David Kidney riding a bike.

(NOTE: David Kidney just happened to be visiting Back2Bikes)

It makes me so mad!!! Everyone there works so hard - my little brother has worked there for free for 3 years now! Its time they got some recognition.

3 Women

I've just finished some work which I'd had to put on hold for a while.

This is a self-initiated project, a theatre poster for Three Women, which was recently staged at the Jermyn Street Theatre in London. I read the Sylvia Plath poem the play was based on, and to begin with I was really inspired by the animations of Lotte Reiniger (and the BFI have just released a collection of her short films), so I started making all these little silhouette people, pregnant women with conch shells for bellies etc. But they seemed a bit lifeless without being animated. And too subtle to work as a poster design. So instead I developed the same sort of technique into this more conceptual idea, which (I hope) sums up a lot of what the play is about.
